The Florence Newspaper: Soccer Museum in Florence (Museo del Calcio)

Florence is known around the globe for its artistic treasures, its history, and the beauty of its buildings and sculptures. In fact, Florence’s Uffizi Gallery and Museo dell’Accademia are two of the most visited museums in the world. Unbeknown to many however, Florence also houses the Museo del Calcio located in Coverciano, near the Artemio Franchi stadium.

Coverciano, “ la casa della nazionale”, or the house of the national team as Fino Fini - founder of the museum and former physiotherapist of the Italian national team from 1962 to 1982 - defines it, is the training base for the Italian national team.

The Museo del Calcio’s three floors reveal the history of Italian and international soccer from its origins in the 20th century. Over the years, Mr. Fini has collected priceless soccer treasures such as cleats, jerseys, trophies, posters, and soccer balls. All jerseys exhibited belonged to former players, and the cleats on display date back to the years of the pioneers.

Newspaper articles, as well as black and white photos of Mussolini and the 1934 and 1938 Italian national teams, flaunt Italy’s international achievement.

While visiting Florence during the month of the World Cup, a visit to the Museo del Calcio for its 10th anniversary will complete the itinerary.
